How pricing works

We don't publish a price list. Gas work depends on the house, and a number made up without seeing it is a number you can't trust.

  • What decides the price

Mostly how far the pipe has to go and what is in the way. A range on a gas stub that is already there is a different job from a line across a yard.

    • How far it is from the meter or tank to the appliance

    • The pipe size and material the appliance's load calls for

    • Walls, floors or concrete we have to open or cross

    • A permit and inspection, where the city requires them

    • The appliance: its load, and whether it comes with a conversion kit

  • What the written price includes, and what it doesn't

It covers the pipe, fittings, shutoff, new connector, permit, pressure test and lighting the appliance. It does not cover drywall, paint, tile or concrete patching, an electrician's work or the appliance itself.

  • What happens at the visit

A fitter comes to look at the run, with the appliance's rating plate in hand. The visit has a set fee, told to you on the phone before we book. If you hire us for the work, the fee comes off the price.

  • After hours

We are a daytime shop, with the hours in the footer. We don't take gas-leak calls at any hour: for a smell, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility. We don't charge a night rate because we don't work nights.

  • When you get the number

Before the first cut. One number for the job, in writing, from what we saw at the visit. You decide with the paper in your hand.

  • If the job changes

If we open a wall and find something the visit couldn't show, we stop, tell you what it is and write the change down before we go on. Nothing is added on the day without your yes.

By job

What moves the price, job by job

No figures, just what the number turns on.

  • A range or dryer on an existing stub

The shutoff and connector, and whether the stub is the right size. The shortest visit we do.

  • A line to a grill or fire pit

The distance from the house, trench or wall run, and whether the path crosses concrete.

  • A standby generator

The generator's load, the distance from the meter, and whether the meter or tank needs to change.

  • A propane conversion

Whether the maker has a kit, and whether the regulator changes. Often the least expensive job.

  • A new line through the house

Pipe size, the number of walls or floors opened, and the permit.

  • A tank-to-house line

The distance, the depth, and what the propane supplier sets at the tank.

Over the phone

What we will and won't say before we see it

We will tell you the visit fee, and what the written price will include. We won't quote a new run, a generator line or a conversion over the phone.

If a price from another firm is much lower, ask what the pressure test, the permit and the connector are. Those are the parts that get left out.

Questions

Pricing questions

Is the visit fee credited?

Yes, if you hire us for the work, the visit fee comes off the written price. If you don't, it is what it was on the phone.

Is the permit on the price?

Yes. Where the work needs one, the permit is part of the written price, not added later.

Do you charge for a night call?

No, because we don't work nights. A gas smell is for 911 or your gas utility.

What isn't on the price?

Drywall, paint, tile and concrete patching, an electrician's work, and the appliance itself.

Want the number for your house?

Book a visit and the written price comes before any work.
